Last week I decided that I needed to update my headshots for my website. I want you to know who will be photographing you and your family! I can be pretty spur of the moment so I set myself up with my tripod and did a few test shots with my remote and my camera. Pretty quickly I realized a few things.
1) I should probably shower and do my hair before trying this for real.
2) Makeup. Need to wear makeup.
3) Different location.
4) I am not a model!
5) What am I going to wear for my photo session?!
I talk with my clients about their outfits all the time, but I always come at it from the photographer side. Wear this, it’ll look great. Don’t wear this, and for the love of god, don’t do this!
But it is SO much more than just that!
“Is this trendy enough?”
“Is this too trendy?”
“Will this make me look fat?”
“Does this color make me look dead?” (actual conversation I had with myself, I kid you not!)
All of these were real thoughts and insecurities that I had while trying to figure out my own outfit, so I broke down my goals for my session, and worked from there.
I wanted pictures that:
-Made me look good (let’s be honest, this is the whole point!)
-Matched my branding (AKA look good on my website!)
One of the things I always like to tell you when thinking about what you are going to wear for your photo session is to think about where you are going to display your images. You don’t want a super casual, bright and airy beach portrait hanging in your formal dining room. Likewise, you don’t want navys and purples in a room that is decorated with light grays and greens.
For my own session it was no different. I want to display my images on my website, blog, and various social media outlets so my clothing needed to compliment those display locations.
My new favorite thing to do is scroll through the hashtag #liketoknowit. Once you download the app, all you have to do is screen shot an instagram post that uses the hashtag and it will pull all the linked clothing and tell you exactly where to buy it! No more hunting for hours to find that shirt/shoes/dress/bag. All the work is done for you – brilliant!
Annnnyyyyway… After some serious outfit hunting I realized that everything about my style is simple, easy, and comfortable. Jeans and a white t-shirt against a light gray background was perfect for me.
I borrowed my friend’s living room and recruited her to push the shutter button and offer moral support – here are a few of my favorites!
There are also some hilarious outtakes that involve a couple of dogs – keep an eye out for those on Instagram!
