One of the number one questions that I get asked during the planning stages of a session is “where should we have our photo session?”
When planning your session location there are a few big things to think about.
Pick a place that means something to you.
Is this your favorite place to go as a family on the weekends? Did you and your significant other meet here? Does your family spend a lot of time together (at the beach/hiking/downtown exploring)
Where and how you will display your images?
Are you planning on putting them in the formal living room that is decorated in a more Victorian style with darker colors? Maybe a bright, airy beach session isn’t the best idea to compliment that space. Will you be using them for a website header? Keep your branding in mind and pick colors and styles that compliment your digital space.
Think about your personalities.
Are you very trendy and love being at the newest restaurant openings? Maybe a downtown urban session is more for you? Are you more relaxed and laid back? Maybe a beach session would fit you perfectly!
Once you have that all figured out, it’s time to think about the more practical side of things.
Are there bathrooms nearby?
When it comes to family pictures with little ones, nothing can turn a session sour faster than someone who needs a bathroom break and can’t get to one quickly!
Another thought is how easy is it to get to the location and what are the abilities of the participants? The Santa Monica Beach is an easy walk on beach that can be ideal with little ones who you have to carry. That being said, I’ve also done sessions where I have hiked 3 miles out on a trail with all my gear as well as my clients carrying their outfits and shoes. We all knew we were fit and able to do that and ended up with one of my favorite sessions to date!
Another thing to think about is parking. Is it free? Paid? Lot? Street? Good luck?
With all of that to think about, I’ve decided to put together some of my favorite locations and list the pros, cons and amenities of each. I’ll also show you some images from the sessions whenever possible.
Check back for a new location each week!
