More about me
I'm Kate, a photographer of motherhood and all of the love and change that it brings. Photographing your connection with your children brings me such joy, and I am so grateful that this career has chosen me.
Hi there!
Lifestyle newborn photos are a wonderful way to document the first few weeks at home with your newborn. But what exactly are lifestyle newborn photos and are they right for your family?
Lifestyle photography is a style of photography that is somewhere between posed photography (think a baby wrapped and placed in a basket with the use of various props) and documentary photography. Documentary photography is when the photographer takes a “fly on the wall” approach and does not direct or interact with their clients at all – they simply photograph what they see as it is unfolding in front of them.
Lifestyle photography is the middle ground of these two styles. It is when the photographer guides their client into a pose or gives them a prompt to help direct them and then photographs what happens.
I love lifestyle newborn photos because they aren’t as stiff or formal as more posed newborn photos, and yet the client still gets some direction so they feel confident with what they are doing. I love to get my clients set up in a position and then see what happens as they interact with each other and their newborn baby.
By helping to position my clients, I find that they are more relaxed and able to genuinely interact with each other instead of being concerned about what to do with their hands or where to look.
I also do individual portraits of the baby during lifestyle newborn photos. I follow a posing method called “Baby Led Posing” which means that I place your baby in safe positions that they would naturally put themselves into. If a baby does not want to easily go into a certain position, we move on. And if they move around in a particular position, I work with their movements and positioning to ensure they are as safe and comfortable as possible.
You might remember Amanda and David from their studio maternity session this winter. Ever since that session, I have been counting down the days until I got to meet their sweet baby and photograph their lifestyle newborn photos!
They had a beautiful picture window in the front of their house and while it required moving some furniture so that we could take full advantage of it – it was worth the extra work! The window overlooked their beautiful front yard which had a pretty purple tree that was in full bloom. We also photographed near a large bright window in their front hallway and then moved up to the nursery and bedroom to capture more images.
At each location in their home, I would direct them in how to stand and place their hands. Then I would step back to move around them and photograph what I saw.
Amanda and David, thank you both so much for trusting me with this incredibly special and long-awaited moment. It has been an honor to get to know you both and to photograph your family. I am so excited to watch your sweet baby grow – he is so lucky to have you as parents!
