Hi there!
Many photographers offer the option of participating in mini-sessions, especially in the fall. Lots of families are looking to get a photo for their holiday card or as a gift for the grandparents before the holidays so it is a great opportunity to get those photos taken. But is a mini-session the right option for you and your family? Today I’m covering the differences between mini-sessions and full sessions and the pros and cons for each.
A full photography session (what I call my Signature Session) is a customized photography experience for the client. The client and I work together to select the date and a location that matches the client’s vision for their session. I also help with styling guidance for my clients and provide a client closet for the mothers. Depending on the session, there can be multiple outfits and locations.
Due to the longer length of the session as well as the variety of locations and outfits, the resulting image gallery tends to be much larger and includes more variety than a mini-session. This is ideal for someone who is hoping to create an album or wall art from their session
Full sessions are ideal for newborn sessions that typically have an uncertain date and require more time to accommodate feeding and settling the baby. They are also a wonderful option for maternity and family portrait sessions where the client has a specific vision for the session and is looking to photograph at a particular type of location or wants more variety in their gallery.
One of the best things about a full session is that you and your children have the time to relax and get comfortable in front of the camera. Having the full hour to photograph allows us time to chat and get to know each other, and lets your children feel confident enough to show their true personality. On the other hand, if you or your family prefer not to be in front of a camera, then an hour can be a very long time for a session. It can also be a long time for younger children who might easily get bored or distracted.
Finally, since the client and photographer pick a specific date for the session, Full sessions are ideal for any significant life event that might not happen around the time a mini-session is being offered.
Mini-sessions are very short sessions lasting anywhere from 5-20 minutes. The photographer will book a bunch of these sessions one after the other on a specific date at one single location that the photographer chooses. Sometimes the session will have a theme such photos with Santa, or will have a specific set such as a floral installation in a studio.
Mini-sessions typically do not come with the same guidance and hands-on assistance from the photographer when it comes to styling the session, and perks such as the Client Closet are usually not included. The client also does not have input on the date or location of the session.
Because of the short duration of mini-sessions, they are great for families who are looking for just a few images for their holiday card or gifts for family members. They are also great for families with young children who might not have the attention span to make it through a full session.
It is important to consider your child’s comfort before choosing a mini-session. If your child is shy or tends to take a little while to warm up to strangers, be aware that this can cut into photo time. Since mini-sessions are booked back to back there is no wiggle room to extend sessions if a child needs more time. I am usually pretty good at getting kids to come out of their shells rather quickly, but the time crunch can be stressful for some families if they are concerned about their child’s comfort.
Another benefit of mini-sessions is that they give you a chance to work with a photographer at a lower price point. Mini-sessions are a wonderful way to test out what it is like to work with a photographer before investing in a full session experience, or are a great option for working with a photographer whose work you love, but whose full session might be out of your budget.
And finally, mini-sessions are ideal for clients who don’t want to have to worry about any of the details. The date and location are set and all the client needs to do is decide if it works for them or not. While my full-session clients get extensive help and guidance in planning their session, sometimes people prefer to just be told when and where to show up (raising my hand over here!)
First of all, you need to determine what your needs are. Do you need only one or two images for your family card, or are you looking to document a major life event? If you truly only need one or two photos then a mini-session is perfect. If you want to celebrate a major milestone, then a full session is probably best.
Next, it’s important to think about your availability. Since mini-session dates and times are set by the photographer, you need to be available on those specific dates. If you can’t make a mini-session event, then a full session is your best option so that you can choose a date and time that works best for you and your family.
How important is a specific location or setup to you? If you have a concrete vision of how you want your photos to look then a full session is the way to go because you have almost full control over the location and styling. If you don’t need a specific location, then a mini-session is for you!
Frequency is something to think about when it comes to your photos. If you want to update your family photos multiple times a year, then utilizing mini-sessions is a great way to do it. If you are doing one big photo session per year or this is a once-in-a-lifetime event then a full session is ideal.
Finally, your budget is important to consider. Knowing what you are comfortable investing in photography will guide your choice. Mini-sessions are typically much less expensive than an investment in a full session experience but come with fewer images, less control over the session, and not as many perks and benefits.
With all of that information hopefully, you have an obvious choice as to which option is right for your family. Each one has its own pros and cons so it is important to consider all of the factors before making a choice so that you end up with photos you love and an experience you enjoyed.
If you have any further questions about which session would be best for you and your family, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me so that we can discuss what you have in mind and see which would be the best fit.
